In the past few years, the notion of "deepfakes" has become part of the common vocabulary. It is associated with terms with negative connotations such as "manipulation" or "disinformation". However, in the field of art, the expression "Deep Fakes" also evokes contemporary advanced computer techniques that can be used to create near-perfect doubles.

Today, as in the past, the authenticity of works and the status of copies is at the heart of the concerns of curators and collectors. Far from the factual binary approach opposing the real and the fake, the exhibition Deep Fakes: Art and Its Double addresses the economic, scientific or educational risks and opportunities linked to the application of digital technologies to the production of replicas of masterpieces. It also questions the ability of digital doubles to provoke a lasting emotional response and raises ethical questions.

Through physical replicas, virtual environments and original works at the cutting edge of technology, the visitor discovers masterpieces, sometimes inaccessible to the public, of the tangible and intangible heritage of Asia, America, Europe or the Middle East.

Deep Fakes: Art and Its Double offers a fascinating exploration of the notions of simulacra, mirror worlds, and digital doubles, as well as of the issues surrounding cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence. It is also a question of reconstitution of memory, decolonization and mimesis.
